Running costs
The “Running costs” box uses the values from the EU energy label (EPREL) to work out what an appliance costs to run. Add a second product and both stand side by side, with a sentence such as “In 5 years about 148 € less electricity and water costs than …”.
In all plans

What it does
- Electricity, plus water for washing machines and dishwashers
- Period of 1 to 20 years, 5 by default
- Visitors can change electricity price and usage themselves
- All assumptions are shown below the figures
- No purchase price comparison – so it also works on sites with Amazon Associates
How affilinode calculates
For washing machines, dishwashers and tumble dryers the box uses the label’s kWh per 100 cycles and the cycles per week, and litres per cycle for water. Fridges and freezers use the kWh per year from the label, TVs and monitors their on-mode power at 4 hours a day, and light bulbs 2.7 hours a day.
Other products with a power rating are calculated at 1 hour a day and marked as a rough estimate. Costs are kWh × electricity price plus m³ × water price, times the number of years – without price increases and without the purchase price.
What visitors see and change
The box always states its assumptions: 35 ct/kWh and €4.50/m³ by default, adjustable in the plugin settings under “Display”. Visitors can change the electricity price, water price and usage in the box; the figures update straight away and nothing is sent anywhere. Without JavaScript the default assumptions apply.
Two appliances side by side
compare puts a second appliance next to the first. Only the same kind of appliance can be compared – washing machine with washing machine. If that doesn’t fit, or consumption values are missing, only logged-in editors see a note.
Examples
Running costs of one appliance with the default assumptions.
[affilinode_energy id="…"]Two appliances over ten years at 32 ct/kWh.
[affilinode_energy id="…" compare="…" years="10" price="32"]Good to know
- The box never uses shop prices. It is not a price comparison, so it is also shown on websites under the Amazon Associates policy.
- On AMP pages the default assumptions apply and there is no form to change them.
- Clicks on the optional button (button="1") count as box type “Running costs” in your reports.
Which shops you can use depends on the plan.
