Languages and countries
On multilingual sites, affilinode keeps two questions apart: the language of the page decides the texts, the visitor’s country decides the offers. A visitor from Austria sees Austrian shops and tracking IDs, even on a German page.
In all plans
What it does
- Box texts, buttons, notices and data sheet labels in the language of the page
- Works with Polylang, WPML and TranslatePress
- Country from a CDN header or MaxMind GeoLite2 – the IP is only looked up locally
- Rules per website: preferred partners, shops to use, exceptions per country
- Country switcher in the price comparison
- Override per box with shops, prefer and countries
Language follows the page
Box texts, buttons, notices and data sheet labels appear in the language of the page: from Polylang or WPML, from TranslatePress (for example /en/) or otherwise from the site language – per subsite on multisite. The language of your user profile plays no part, not even in the preview.
If a translation is missing, the text comes in the base language, German, with a matching lang attribute; texts are never mixed. Your own texts such as the button text or the affiliate notice are translated with Polylang or WPML String Translation.
Offers per visitor country
The country comes from your CDN’s geo header first (for example Cloudflare CF-IPCountry), otherwise from MaxMind’s GeoLite2 country database, otherwise the site’s default country applies. Only “Allowed countries” are used.
The page and its caches hold the box for the default country. With the loading mode hybrid or Ajax, the browser swaps it for the offers of the visitor’s country with its tracking IDs, and that answer is never cached for other visitors. With the country switcher in the price comparison, visitors can choose for themselves.
Rules per website and per box
In the dashboard you decide per website which shops a country shows and which partner comes first – for example “prefer Amazon, otherwise the cheapest of the listed shops”, with exceptions for single countries.
A single box can override this with shops (only these shops), prefer (preferred partner, several in order) and countries (the countries of this box).
Examples
Prefer Awin for this box
[affilinode_product id="…" prefer="awin"]Only certain shops and countries
[affilinode_product id="…" shops="amazon,awin" countries="DE,AT,CH"]Good to know
- The visitor’s IP address is only looked up on your server – never stored and never sent to affilinode or MaxMind. For MaxMind you enter your own account ID and licence key; the database updates weekly.
- An Amazon offer is only chosen when its link carries your partner tag. Every Amazon marketplace is a shop of its own with its own partner tag.
- There is no country switcher on AMP pages.
Which shops you can use depends on the plan.
